Potato Leafhopper (PLH):   Potato leafhoppers have been observed in Vermont. The insect overwinters in southern states and is blown northward in summer air masses.  The nymphs and adults are pale green and appear “agitated” when disturbed (i.e., they move rapidly, often sideways).   PHL damage occurs on the youngest leaves on terminals;  the edges of the leaves become light green and eventually die.   Damage is often misidentified as herbicide injury or nutritional deficiency.  Check your orchard – particularly young trees where damage can be significant.   Provado and Thiodan  are effective against this insect.

Calyx End Rot and Dry-Eye Rot:  Symptoms of these diseases usually appear about a month after petal fall.  The calyx end of the fruit reddens and then rots.  By the time you see the symptoms,  it is too late to do anything about it.   These diseases are more prevalent in seasons when there are extended rainy periods during bloom and petal fall.
