Vermont Apple IPM Alert

Leafminers: We have seen an alarming number of second-generation sap-feeding mines over the last two days on the underside of mid-terminal leaves at the UVM Hort.Res.Center. Now would be a good time to check your orchard for the presence of sap-feeding mines on the undersurface of mid-terminal leaves. Threshold: 1 mine/leaf on stressed trees; 2 mines/leaf on non-stressed trees. Please see page 140 of the 2000-2001 New Eng. Apple Pest Management Guide for insecticide options. Timing is critical; insecticide should be applied before 10% of mines enter tissue-feeding stage (i.e., when mines can be seen on the top surface of the leaf).

Apple Maggot Flies: Reports from Mass. and our data indicate light trap captures so far.
