An IPM Checklist for Vermont

As previously indicated, each issue of the Vermont Apple Newsletter will contain parts of  the IPM  Checklist  that Dr. Elena Garcia and I developed through a USDA project entitled:  "Linking Food Safety to Farm*A*Sys and IPM to Reduce Microbial and Pesticide Risks in Apples.   The checklist is intended to be a quick reminder; details can be found in other  parts of this newsletter or in other  available resources.

August

  • Be aware of any restrictions on pesticides used during this period and their 'Pre-Harvest Intervals'.
  • Continue to examine leaves for presence of second generation Leafhopper nymphs and adults to determine if threshold has been reached.
  • Examine middle-age terminal leaves to determine if threshold has been reached for European Red Mites.
  • Check Apple Maggot Fly traps on a regular basis to determine if threshold has been reached.  Clean traps and replace lure every 3-4 weeks.
  • Continue summer pruning.
  • Clean and repair harvesting bags and fruit storage containers.
  • Check predicted harvest dates and if planning to use 'harvest aid compounds', determine when to apply.
  • Monitor soil moisture conditions and irrigate when necessary.
  • Mow grass as often as possible to discourage Vole populations and to aid in air circulation for disease management. Keep an 18-inch weed free area next to trees.
